Selank is an anti-anxiety and cognitive peptide developed by the Russian Academy of Sciences, where it's been approved as a prescription medication. It's a synthetic peptide derived from tuftsin, a naturally occurring immune-regulating peptide. What sets it apart from conventional anxiety treatments: it calms without sedating, sharpens focus instead of dulling it, and carries no risk of tolerance or withdrawal. It works through GABA, serotonin, and dopamine pathways, plus it has an immune-balancing effect that most anti-anxiety compounds don't offer.

HOW IT WORKS

How it works

Selank calms the nervous system by enhancing GABA activity, your brain's natural "slow down" signal, which reduces anxiety without sedation. It also balances serotonin and dopamine levels, improving mood and sharpening focus. On top of that, it boosts BDNF (a protein that supports learning and memory) in the hippocampus and helps regulate inflammatory signaling, which is why it also supports immune function.

BEST FOR

Key benefits

What the research shows:

  • Calms anxiety without sedation, brain fog, or drowsiness
  • No tolerance or withdrawal, unlike benzodiazepines
  • Sharpens focus and cognitive function at the same time
  • Boosts BDNF, supporting learning and memory
  • Balances immune function (unique among anti-anxiety compounds)
  • Neuroprotective: helps protect brain cells from stress-related damage
  • Prescription-approved in Russia with extensive clinical research
REGULATORY STATUS

Regulatory status

Removed from Category 2 in September 2024 when the original nominator withdrew. Not currently scheduled for FDA pharmacy compounding advisory committee review. Approved as a prescription medication in Russia.

DOSING

Nasal spray

most studied

Nasal Selank activates NMDA receptor binding sites that injection does not, which may contribute to its cognitive and brain function effects. Direct nose-to-brain transport via olfactory pathways provides rapid onset in 15-30 minutes. Best for on-demand cognitive support and fast-acting anxiety relief.

What to know

  • Store in the fridge and use within 30 days of opening
  • If your nose is congested or you are actively sick, wait until you have recovered
  • Nasal dryness or irritation can develop with prolonged daily use. Take breaks if needed
  • Use properly stored, high-quality nasal spray formulations only
  • If you are on other nasal medications, check with your clinician about combining
